Iranians and human rights advocates across the world prepare to mark the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death while in police custody. Amini, 22, died in Tehran on September 16 last year after being arrested by the morality police for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly. The tragedy sparked the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement - the biggest show of opposition to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution. Iranians took to the streets for months to demand fundamental changes in the country, including gender equality and more freedoms, despite a state crackdown that claimed the lives of more than 500 people.
