The team had been facing elimination if they lost after having been thrashed 6-2 by England in their opener. These pictures show the hopes felt by the Iranian supporters in Qatar before and during the match, and their explosion of joy after the final whistle. Some supporters expressed support for the ongoing protest movement at home, carrying pre-revolutionary Iranian flags and wearing garment with the slogan of the movement “Woman, Life, Freedom” or the name of Mahsa Amini, the woman whose death in the custody of morality police triggered the wave of anger.
