Nasim Sultanbeigi, a prominent Iranian women's rights activist and journalist, entered Tehran’s Evin prison on November 21 to start serving a three-and-a-half-year sentence, her lawyer says.

Maryam Kian Ersi made the announcement on the social media platform X, expressing concern regarding the “adverse medical implications” of incarceration for Sultanbeigi.

"The authorities and those executing the punishment bear the responsibility for my client's health," she added.

Sultanbeigi was detained at Tehran's Khomeini International Airport in December 2022 while attempting to leave the country, and was temporarily released in February pending the outcome of her trial.

Sultanbeigi was sentenced to three years and six months in prison on charges including assembly and collusion, and propaganda activities against the system.

The Court of Appeals of Tehran province upheld the sentence, which led to her incarceration.

Sultanbeigi's case highlights the ongoing crackdown on journalists and civil activists in Iran.

On November 19, journalist Saeedeh Shafiei was also taken to Evin prison to serve a prison sentence of three years and a half.
