Iranian Court Confirms Labor Activist Mohtadi’s Six-Year Sentence

An Iranian appeals court has confirmed a six-year prison sentence for workers’ rights activist Keyvan Mohtadi, his wife says.

Anisha Asadollahi wrote on Twitter that the appeals court of Tehran province confirmed the sentence on March 14, and that her husband was “not included in the amnesty." She was referring to a claim of the authorities that thousands of prisoners have been “pardoned” over past few weeks.

"We are not afraid. The anger of oppressors is a sign of our resistance and resilience," said Asadollahi, who was also arrested in the past for supporting workers' rights.

Mohtadi, a translator and member of the Iranian Writers Association, was arrested on May 5, 2022, and transferred to Tehran’s Evin prison.

In January, the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced him in first instance to five years in prison for "collusion and gathering against national security" and one year for "propaganda against the system."

The sentencing came amid a brutal crackdown by the Islamic Republic on months of nationwide protests demanding fundamental economic, social and political change in the country. More than 520 people have been killed so far and over 20,000 have been illegally detained, activists say. Following biased trials, the judiciary handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters.
