One of Iran’s best-known and admired actresses has demonstrated her support for the public protests sweeping Iran, appearing on a social media video without a hijab.

Fatemeh Motamed-Arya showed her anger at the ongoing violent suppression of protesters.

"In a country where they kill young freedom-seeking people and little girls, I'm not considered a woman," she wept in a clip that went viral Thursday.

Motamed-Arya, 60, is a multiple award-winning actress known in the west for her films including Nabat (2014), Avalanche (2015) and Here Without Me (2011).

The government in Tehran recently featured Motamed-Arya in a mural celebrating several prominent women of contemporary Iran. Her portrait is featured in Valiasr Square alongside other female artists including Homa Rusta, Simin Daneshvar, Parvin Etisami, Iran Dorodi,  Narges Abiyar, Merila Zarei, and Parvaneh Masoumi.

But Motamed-Arya condemned the use of her image, and demanded it be removed in a post on Instagram, writing "Take my picture down from the wall of Valiasr Square!''

She then posting a short video clip in which she appears without a hijab.

"I am a mother. I am Mahsa’s mother. Sarina's mother. I am the mother of all those children who’ve been killed in this country, not a woman amongst murderers!” she added.

Numerous other actresses have posted images of themselves on social media without a hijab in support of the young women protesting for their rights on the streets.
