A well-known photojournalist arrested for covering the ongoing protests in Tehran last week has spoken to IranWire from the notorious Qarchak Prison.
Yalda Moayeri was detained last Tuesday and taken to the detention center in Varamin, which is known for squalid, inhumane conditions and the brutality of its guards.
“We are not safe here,” she said. “The situation is very bad; there are fights and beatings every day.
“A crowd of more than 100 people has been thrown into a sports hall without facilities and without ventilation. The bathrooms are dire and people are regularly sedated.”
Moayeri is a member of the Iranian Press Photographers Association and one of several journalists to have been arrested since protests began on September 16.
