A court in Iran has sentenced to death an Iranian-German national who has spent more than 1,000 days in solitary confinement.

Jamshid Sharmahd, who also has U.S. residency, was convicted of the charge of "corruption on Earth by planning and directing terrorist acts," the public relations department of the judiciary of Tehran province said on February 21.

It said the verdict can be appealed in the Supreme Court.

Sharmahd is accused of heading a pro-monarchist group accused of a deadly 2008 bombing and planning other attacks in Iran.

His family has denied his involvement in violent actions.

In a video message posted on Twitter on January 18, Sharmahd’s daughter sharply criticized German authorities for their silence regarding her father's incarceration.

Ghazaleh Sharmahd said that over the past year, her father has been tortured, "his teeth have fallen out, he has lost 20 kilos, and he is unable to walk or breathe easily."

In August 2022, Amnesty International said that the Iranian authorities “have forcibly disappeared and are torturing” Sharmahd, who was aged 67 at the time. The London-based human rights watchdog said the suspect was facing a “grossly unfair” trial.

The Iranian Intelligence Ministry announced Sharmahd's arrest in 2020, alleging that he was "the ringleader of the terrorist Tondar group."

The Los Angeles-based Iranian opposition group Kingdom Assembly of Iran, or Tondar, says it aims to overthrow the Islamic Republic established in 1979. It runs opposition radio and television stations abroad, as well as social media channels.
