Hundreds turned out on Tuesday to protest in front of the governor's office

People in the Iranian city of Shahrekord in Charmahal and Bakhtiari province have gathered in front of the governor’s office to protest after nine days with no piped water.

Videos posted online on Tuesday showed furious residents chanting slogans against the local and national governments, and shouting: “Only the street will give us our dues.” Large numbers of police officers were dispatched to the site of the demonstration.

Reports of low to no water pressure in the city first began to surface on Ashura day, August 7. A pipeline from the Koohrang spring in the mountains to Shahrekord is believed to have been cut off due to the turbidity of the water following the recent torrential rains.

The Shahrekord area is the biggest source of fresh drinking water in Iran, and home to the sources of three major rivers: the Dez, the Karun and the Zayanderud.
