At least 38 people have been injured in Saqqez and Sanandaj amid protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, human rights sources report.

Demonstrations continued for a third day on Sunday over news that the 22-year-old from Kurdistan province had died from injuries she apparently sustained after being abducted by the so-called “morality patrol”.

The Kurdish human rights platform Hengaw reports that some 38 people are known to have been injured by security forces trying to break up the protests, including with live ammunition. At least 13 have been arrested.

A known 33 people were also injured during Saturday’s protests in Saqqez, Mahsa’s home city. Five people were taken to medical centers in Tabriz with serious injuries requiring specialist care, including shots to the eye area.

Behzad Rahimi, the MP for Saqqez, admitted in a surreal TV interview on Saturday that officers had deliberately shot at protesters. “No one was killed and we had just a few wounded people,” he said. “Of course, one person is also hospitalized in Saqez due to several bullets hitting his intestines.”

On Sunday protests over Mahsa (Zhina) Amini’s death also reached Tehran University: the first time a demonstration has been staged by students in a decade. A group marched down the street chanting the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom” and carried placards bearing the message, in both Persian and Kurdish, “I don’t want to die”. One read: "Dear Mahsa, you didn't die! Your name will become a symbol".

At one stage, a group of paramilitary Basij members attacked the students. They in turn chanted “Shameless, Shameless".

Mahsa was rushed to hospital on Tuesday night two hours after being taken to a detention center for “re-education” by fanatics belonging to the “morality patrol”. Doctors declared she was braindead and her death was announced on Friday.
