A Tehran court is reviewing a “repentance request” from Iranian singer Amirhossein Maghsoudloo, known as Tataloo, that could lead to reduced punishment, the provincial prosecutor said on Monday.

Ali Alghasi, Tehran Province’s chief prosecutor, said the rapper’s family had approached authorities seeking sentence reduction based on a submitted repentance letter.

“Given the repeated requests of the convict and his expression of remorse, it has been decided that the relevant court will examine whether repentance is proven or not,” Alghasi said.

Alghasi added that determining “whether repentance is proven or not” falls within the jurisdiction of the court that issued the original sentence.

“An order for review has been issued, but the final judgment rests with the court,” he said.

The prosecutor said the rapper’s confession to the charges against him was significant in his case.

“Based on this, the punishment was determined. For this reason, according to Article 114 of the Islamic Penal Code, reviewing the possibility of repentance has become legally feasible,” he said.

Alghasi said the rapper’s behavior in prison would also be considered, and the court would handle the matter “in a standard manner.”

On December 4, 2023, Iranian media reported that Turkish police arrested Tataloo following a complaint from the Iranian consulate in Istanbul, accusing him of harassing members and staff.

He was subsequently handed over to Iranian police.

The tattooed rapper criticized the Iranian government’s human rights record in his songs and on social media.

However, Tataloo later adopted a conservative stance and urged his fans to vote for hardliners in the 2017 presidential elections.

His most famous single, “Nuclear Energy,” released before the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, asserted Iran’s right to self-defense.

The accompanying music video, shot on a warship in the Persian Gulf, fueled speculation that the Iranian establishment had co-opted him.

Instagram blocked Tataloo’s account in 2019 for anti-women content and for promoting child marriage.

In his Instagram stories, Tataloo claimed he planned to establish a “Sultan’s Palace” in Türkiye and invite girls between 15 and 20 to join.
