The Iranian Football Federation has officially confirmed that Carlos Queiroz will be the head coach of the national team for the World Cup, starting at the end of this week.

After days of unverified reports, seeded to media outlets closely aligned to newly reelected president Mehdi Taj, the Federation’s board of directors finally acknowledged the rumors were true in a statement issued via the media manager.

“The Federation will be grateful to [current head coach] Dragan Skočić for his efforts and [Iran’s] promotion to the World Cup,” head of PR Mohammad Jamaat wrote on Twitter.

“But on the decision of the board, Carlos Queiroz has been chosen as the new head coach. We hope the national team's play will be like those of the previous two World Cups with Queiroz as the head coach. It has made people happy, and we can give a proud performance.”

Queiroz, the Federation said, would be taking over management of the team’s training camp from September 11, on an initial four-month contract valued at 50,000 euros a month.

The Portuguese coach, who has also led Manchester United and Real Madrid, previously managed Team Melli from 2011 to 2019.

The exact status of current manager Dragan Skočić remains unclear. Yesterday Varzesh 3 reported that the Croatian had resigned, but he has yet to make a formal statement on the matter.
