The Islamic Republic's Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist imprisoned in Lakan Prison in northern Rasht.
Amir Raeisian, Mohammadi's lawyer, announced the decision on his X account. He said, "The Supreme Court, after reviewing the case, overturned the death sentence of my client, Ms. Sharifeh Mohammadi, and referred the case for a retrial to an equivalent branch."
Mohammadi was arrested in December 2023 and, after a year of imprisonment, sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Rasht on charges of "rebellion" for her alleged membership in an opposition group.
However, documents obtained by IranWire indicate that the evidence used to convict Mohammadi was inadequate.
Judge Ahmad Darvish Goftar of the Rasht Revolutionary Court based his ruling on innocuous materials, including anti-execution pamphlets supporting arrested women's rights activists and membership in a Telegram channel called "Talk."
