Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Moscow on Friday to finalize a strategic partnership treaty focused on defense cooperation.
During Pezeshkian’s first visit to the Kremlin since taking office in July last year, he expressed optimism about agreeing to Russian assistance in constructing a nuclear power plant in Iran.
Putin said that the comprehensive agreement, which has been in development for some time, aims to strengthen economic and trade relations between the two nations.
“We will discuss all areas of our cooperation and sign a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement,” Putin said.
He added, “We have been working on it for a long time, and I am very pleased that this work has been completed.”
Russia has increasingly sought closer ties with nations antagonistic to the United States, including North Korea, particularly since its invasion of Ukraine.
Moscow has already established strategic agreements with North Korea, Belarus, and China.
