Nima Khandan, son of imprisoned human rights activist Reza Khandan, was arrested on Wednesday morning at Evin Prison’s visiting hall before being released hours later.
His sister Mehraveh announced his release on Instagram.
In a subsequent phone call to family members, their father Reza Khandan, who is currently held in Ward 8 of Evin Prison, said he had begun a hunger strike.
Mehraveh said, “According to the received news, Nima was released a few minutes ago, and my father, in a call with family members, announced that he has started his hunger strike.”
Details about the incident that led to the younger Khandan’s arrest have not been disclosed.
Reza Khandan has been imprisoned since December 13, 2024.
He was sentenced to six years in prison in September 2018 alongside physician and activist Farhad Meysami.
Both men were convicted of “assembly and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the Islamic Republic” for protesting Iran’s mandatory hijab law.
Nasrin Sotoudeh, Khandan’s wife and Nima’s mother, is a prominent human rights lawyer who has previously faced multiple arrests and imprisonments for her advocacy work in Iran.
