Following the US attacks on positions in southern Iran, the Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters issued a statement announcing a counterattack by the Islamic Republic’s forces against US bases in the region, warning that if Washington’s attacks continue, more severe responses will follow.
In the statement, which was released hours after the US military’s operation, Washington’s attacks were described as “aggression,” and it was stated that the Army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had targeted several US bases in the region. Islamic Republic military officials also claimed that 21 US bases were attacked during the operation.
However, reports published by American sources have called this claim into question. The New York Times, quoting a US official, wrote that initial assessments indicated nearly all of the Islamic Republic’s attacks were intercepted, and that no reports of damage to US bases or casualties among US forces had been received.
The newspaper also quoted another American official as saying that the IRGC’s claim regarding the targeting of US bases was untrue. At the same time, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has not yet officially taken a stance on the details of these claims.
