Nahid Taghavi, a 69-year-old Iranian-German dual citizen, has been released from detention in Iran and returned to Germany after serving four years of a nearly 11-year sentence, her family announced on Monday.
“It’s over. Nahid is free,” wrote her daughter Maryam Klaren on X, posting a photo of her mother and requesting privacy for the family.
“After more than four years as a political prisoner in the Islamic Republic of Iran, my mother Nahid Taghavi was freed and is back in Germany. Thanks to everyone who campaigned to #freenahid. I kindly ask the media to respect our privacy.”
Taghavi’s release comes three months after she was granted temporary leave from Tehran’s Evin Prison under electronic monitoring on September 30, 2024.
She had been arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence organization in 2020 and spent seven months in solitary confinement before being sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison for alleged involvement in an illegal group.
During her imprisonment, Taghavi faced significant health challenges, including severe joint pain, a herniated disc, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Despite these medical conditions, she remained under pressure from security forces throughout her detention.
