The mother of a detained 19-year-old Iranian protester, who has spent months in prison, has died after suffering a mental breakdown over her son's uncertain situation, IranWire reports.

Ali Makan Davari, from northern Langrood, was arrested and imprisoned in October 2022 following nationwide protests.

He was accused by the Langrood Revolutionary Court of "disruption of order, gathering and collusion with the intention of disrupting national security, corruption on Earth, propaganda activity, waging war against God and insulting the leader of the Islamic Republic."

The accusations carry a death sentence.

A separate case involving Davari pertains to his alleged disobedience of a security officer's orders – resulting in a bail order of 500 million tomans ($10,000).

However, no definitive verdict has been issued for either of these cases, leaving his fate uncertain.

The trial for this protester occurred in December 2022, subsequently leading to his release from detention on bail.

Security forces have responded to the women-led protest movement with brutal force, killing more than 520 people during demonstrations and unlawfully detaining over 20,000 others, activists say.

Following biased trials, the judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters.

The protests and clampdown on dissent have been particularly intense in western Kurdish areas and Sistan and Baluchistan.
