The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran has released a new report detailing the severe and disproportionate impact of the Iranian government's crackdown on protesters since 2022, with a focus on its effects on ethnic and religious minorities.

According to the report, ethnic and religious minorities, particularly Kurd and Baluch communities, have borne the brunt of the government's response to the protests.

The Mission states that "the impact of the protests on minorities cannot be overstated," noting that the social fabric of these communities has been significantly damaged.

The paper highlights the unique challenges faced by women from minority groups, who experience "distinct harms" compounded by pre-existing discrimination based on both their gender and minority status.

Furthermore, the report warns of transgenerational impacts on children, with potential consequences that may persist for decades.

The Fact-Finding Mission observed that ethnic and religious minorities demonstrated the highest and most prolonged participation in the protest movement, extending well into 2023.

The 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests in Iran erupted following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in police custody after being arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly.

Starting in September of the year, the demonstrations rapidly spread across the country, evolving into the most significant challenge to the Islamic Republic's rule in decades. Protesters, led predominantly by women and youth, demanded fundamental rights, an end to mandatory hijab laws, and broader social and political reforms.
