Self-Immolation Attempt After School Rejects Child's Enrollment

The father of a Baluch student attempted self-immolation outside the General Directorate of Education in Sistan and Baluchistan province on Tuesday.

The desperate act followed the father's repeated but unsuccessful attempts to enroll his child in a school, which were met with unexplained resistance from school administrators, according to the Haalvsh news website.

A source reported that the father had made several visits to a school near his residence in Mehr city. Despite his efforts, school officials consistently denied his enrollment request without providing any justification.

Frustrated by the lack of response from both the school and the General Directorate of Education regarding his complaints, the father attempted to set himself on fire.

On the day of the incident, after being denied a meeting with the General Director of Education, he doused himself with petrol in an apparent self-immolation attempt. However, quick intervention by bystanders prevented the act from taking place.

In response to media coverage, Ali Farhadi, the spokesperson for the education department, acknowledged the possibility of mistreatment at the school level. 

"We do not deny that there may have been poor treatment at the school," Farhadi said, adding that such cases are handled by a unit responsible for performance evaluation and responding to complaints.
