Saqqez - A prominent activist in the western Kurdish city of Saqqez has been detained amid an alarming surge in arrests targeting civil society in Mahsa Amini’s hometown ahead of the first anniversary of her death.
Security forces took Omid Moghadas into custody as he is still recovering from a recent heart surgery. Moghadas previously worked at a computer service shop.
The Iranian authorities, fearing a flare up in protests ahead of the September 16 anniversary of Amini’s death in police custody, have ramped up security measures in Kurdistan province, particularly Saqqez, where Amini is buried.
Videos shared on social media suggest that troops are being deployed to Saqqez and other cities in Kurdistan.
Cities in the province have experienced a significant slowdown in internet speed over the past 48 hours.
