Political prisoner Mohsen Langarneshin was executed early on Wednesday, according to Mizan, the official news agency of Iran’s judiciary.

Langarneshin was arrested by security forces in Tehran in July 2023 and interrogated at a Ministry of Intelligence facility before being transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

In a previously released audio recording, he said he was tortured during interrogations to force a televised confession.

The Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced him to death on charges of "espionage for Israel."

Details of the case were not officially released, and the trial was conducted behind closed doors.

Langarneshin's family gathered outside Qezelhesar Prison on Tuesday and shared videos on social media in an effort to stop the execution.

He had been moved to solitary confinement two days earlier.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized Iran for using torture to extract confessions and for holding non-transparent trials in security-related cases.

Iran executed at least 169 people in January and February, according to Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran.

During her first address to the UN Human Rights Council, Sato warned that if the current pace continues, Iran could carry out more than 1,000 executions this year.

“I am very concerned about the rapid rise in the number of executions, especially in just the last two months,” Sato told IranWire in an exclusive interview following her presentation.

“I believe, looking at last year’s patterns, January and February are usually quiet months, but we’ve already identified at least 169 executions,” she added.
