A court overseeing the trial of defendants in the murder case of renowned Iranian cinema director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, is set to reconvene to address ambiguities in the case.
The 83-year-old Mehrjui and Mohammadifar were stabbed to death last year in their home in Karaj, near Tehran.
According to the Etemad newspaper, the court proceedings are scheduled for this weekend.
This development follows the Supreme Court of Iran’s decision to accept objections raised by the lawyer representing Mehrjui’s family.
The highest judicial body ruled that the initial investigation was flawed and ordered a more thorough inquiry to address the concerns raised.
As a result, the case was referred back to the Fardis Court for further examination.
Mehrjui, known as a co-founder of Iran’s new-wave cinema movement in the 1970s, focused on realism. His wife was a screenwriter and costume designer.
Their murders have caused shock and outrage among Iranians, with many drawing parallels to political assassinations that have rocked the country over the past decades.
